Festival Highlights

The end of every mountain film festival in Tegernsee is marked by the grand award ceremony for competition winners. The winning films are presented by means of short sequences, and the jury members explain the reasons behind their decisions. Many of the winners accept their trophies in person. An occasion to celebrate together with all participants – film makers, jury, supporters, organisers and the evening’s special guests.

Everest: Sea to Summit

In 1984, Tim Macartney-Snape climbed Mount Everest without supplementary oxygen. A feat that less than 200 people have ever attempted, let alone accomplished. In 1990 he returned to Everest with the idea of a first ascent from sea to summit. Bad weather and a high risk of avalanches changed his plans in the end, so that he ended up climbing the South Col route.

Michael Dillon received the Grand Prix of the International Alliance for Mountain Film this year.

One hundred years after the first attempt on Mount Everest, this film explores the history of its 1921, 1922 and 1924 expeditions. Focal character is Julie Summers, the grandniece of Sandy Irvine, who disappeared together with George Mallory during her summit attempt in 1924. The film conjures the past into the present, using John Noel’s original footage and many images from the Alpine Club’s collection, as well as footage of Noel Odell’s last sighting of Mallory and Irvine.

At the end of the evening, Michael Düchs talks to David Göttler about his Everest ascent this past spring.

1,413 horizontal miles (2,274 km) and 151,522 vertical feet (46,184 m) by mountain bike. Mighty rock faces. Two first ascents. After numerous expeditions, climbing and adventure pro Stefan Glowacz and his tour partner Philipp Hans look for adventure at their doorstep. They cannot yet imagine the tribulations this sustainability-oriented ultra-transalpine quest holds in store for them.

The director already received awards at the Mountain Film Festivals in 2004 and 2011.

The Schober Group in the High Tauern mountain range is a scenic gem, wild and pristine. The refuges of this area are managed by people who are able to listen to the silence. For part of the year, they live far removed from civilisation on the Wiener Höhenweg trail. This route is not often used, as the Schober Group lies in the shadow of Mount Grossglockner, which attracts visitors in droves. And yet, on the “forgotten path”, time takes on a different meaning.

Over the past twenty years, a small island in the Indian Ocean has spawned an incredibly successful climbing community. The film explores the question of how a set of features that at first glance looks like a handicap – heat, humidity and island isolation – was transformed into a source of power that by today, has turned La Réunion into a true climbing island.

In Russia, Karachay horses have been bred for centuries as a livestock breed. About 50 years ago, however, they were considered almost extinct. Breeders succeeded in ensuring the survival of the sure-footed, obedient and strong-nerved animals. This ascent of Mount Elbrus is intended to broadcast this achievement.

Having completed more than ten ascents, Sophie Lavaud stands a good chance of becoming the first Swiss woman to climb all fourteen eight-thousanders. But Mount Dhaulagiri with an altitude of 26,794 ft (8,167 m) is far from easy to conquer. On this adventure, she is accompanied by two women who call the all-female expedition “Women who dare”.

Caroline Fink received an Honourable Mention by the Jury in 2021 for “Was sie wohl tun wird mit uns?“ (What Will This Do to Us?)
